How to Crack IIT-JEE exam in the very First Attempt ?

We have received a lot of queries by the students asking tips to crack IIT JEE (Mains & Advanced). So, we decided to write on this topic and help our beloved users with the tips and tricks to crack IIT-JEE in just first attempt!

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a dream for many students. Did you know, years back aspirants waited for almost 4-5 years to crack IIT JEE! In fact, many students spent few years in some other college, and then after when they qualified IIT-JEE, they came to IIT without any regret of losing a year or many! Yeah, that was the spirit of IIT! But this brought up low-quality engineers from IIT, after which in 2016, IIT JEE has taken few steps to filter genuine quality from repeaters. Nevertheless, IIT’s are the top Engineering colleges in India!

So, what exactly were the changes proposed in 2016?

In 2016, Joint Entrance Examination Committee made some changes in eligibility rules for IIT JEE. These changes allow only those who have passed the qualifying exam not more than one year back. That is, only a maximum of two attempts are allowed to appear for IIT JEE for any student.

Generally, students who are not both lucky and brilliant simultaneously, fail to mark an impression in first attempt of IIT JEE. I’m pointing at luck and brilliance both. Why both? As even just brilliance cannot guarantee you to be an IITian in the first shot. There are lots of complications. Like you’ll have to cover the syllabus in the right time, you also have to face the board exams before IIT JEE exam, and finally you have to quickly switch to IIT JEE syllabus just after board exam.s get over! Many loose the edge at very last step of their preparation, not due to brilliance, but, due to so much complications and lack of appropriate guidance. Just before IIT JEE, many lose their hopes to get selected. So, it needs luck with brilliance to pass IIT JEE in the first shot.

  • So, here I will be discussing that how exactly your preparation should be like so that you increase your probability of cracking the world’s toughest exam right in just the first attempt.
  • What should be your strategy?
  • How should you study?
  • When is the right time for pace?
  • When should you join test series?
  • What can be the right time to start with your revision?
  • Either you should join any coaching or just home preparation will suffice?

So, my aim is to discuss all these queries.

Is Coaching Necessary?

It’s true that coaching is not the ultimate guide to fetch you with your desirous seat in IIT. But note it down that you should be associated with any coaching once during your preparation. If you have taken any professional coaching up till 12th, now, go for home preparation. If you were not associated with coaching during 11th or 12th, it is a good time for you to do so. Do not forget that coaching is very important to know most about JEE especially those who are average, do well after coaching. We, at Edufers, helped thousands of students to secure the best Coaching Institute, that helped these students reach greater heights! Wanna be in the success list? The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination and always do what you are afraid to do.

One thing I want to urge you is if you believe that few more efforts will let you crack IIT JEE than the first attempt then go for it! Join an IIT-JEE coaching during 11th and 12th. Don’t leave the professional help for post-board duration. Coaching gives you a lot more exposure and also lets you face the competitive world more clearly. But, it takes away your energy and also need much mental and physical work. Also, you become much more matured and start understanding the pattern of IIT JEE after joining coaching. This will ultimately help you to study in the right manner in your final shot.

Now, lets move on for those who had already joined a coaching Institute during Class 12th but don’t want to join any coaching then. These are for you.

After your JEE exam gets over. Don’t waste much time in useless enjoyment. Re-start your preparation after a gap of not more than 7 days.

Begin with a proper analysis of your syllabus in relation to your preparation. Try to figure out which chapters do you need to improve on and which are your best portions. Also, note down the books to refer. In this one year of preparation, you should concentrate more on clarifying concept by solving more and more problems.

I would suggest you to go for Arihant books in Physics and Mathematics. However, Arihant Books are not recommended for Chemistry because they have lots of errors. Try Schaum series or others like O P Tondon or O P Agrawal for Physical Chemistry. For Organic strictly go for Solomons & Fryhle. It is the best book for Organic chemistry for IIT JEE, but please keep the solution book aside! For Inorganic, use Arihant. Memorize every reaction and its sub-types. Go for problems. The more regularly you solve the problems. The more you will improve in Organic or Inorganic Chemistry. Not to mention, these books are not only the best books in the market. But, yeah these are most tested ones too. You will also find many positive reviews!

Also, refer to the materials provided by the coaching institutes. They are prepared by the top-notch faculty of every department! Try to solve a variety of problems available, rather just sticking to the same kind!. In this manner, you get more and more familiar with problems. Remember, IIT JEE doesn’t check your speed! You will have enough time to solve problems to secure good rank in JEE. You need to concentrate a lot and do lots of practice. Required speed will be acquired just by practice.

What’s more…? Tricks!

Now, I’m going to tell you a very important trick, which would help you later in revision. While going through problems, mark the problems with stars, on the basis of difficulty.  In this way, you can revise only these problem which includes a mixture of concepts and hence, saves a lot of time during revision! This simple technique will boost up your revision time 2-3 folds. The common confusion among students during revision is that they are not sure where to start from! But, with this trick in use, you are actually planning for revision without giving your precious time.

Remember, it’s totally on to you that which problem to be marked. So, don’t refer the stars marked by your friend! It might be difficult to him but not to you and finally, you end up wasting your time solving all the easy questions and miss out any difficult one. Don’t just mark hard problems. Instead, mark the problems in a way which could help you to revise in less time later. So, after solving chapters go through marked problems and see whether you can revise those problems.

It is recommended to close the first phase of detailed study, up till December to January.

In phase 2, you should revise and try to gather whatever you have read in last 7-8 months. Aim is to command on different topics you have read. Use your marked questions for this step. Solving them will just raise your level in every chapter. If you are unable to solve some problems, refer theory books. This phase should end 20 – 25 days prior to the exam date.

In between November and December, most of the institutes start their test series for JEE. Join a good test series. Appear for it regularly. But, never spend the time to prepare for test series. Not even on day prior to the test date. If you desperately want to read a little, give 1hr -2hr on last night before test date. These are to test your actual level.

In the last phase, solve simulator tests at your home. These tests should be taken by you in the same time duration as for IIT JEE exam. The general schedule for JEE Paper 1: 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon and Paper 2: 2:00 PM -5:00 PM.

Sit for tests each day at 9:00 AM sharp. Use chair and table for giving exams. Your body should adjust to exam schedule. Between 12:00 to 2:00 PM, test your score for Paper 1. Afterwards, look through solution for incorrect answers. Analyse where you missed. Then, have your lunch. Lastly, relax a bit, and at sharp 2:00 PM sit for Paper 2. After the second test, check your marks. Go through solutions for incorrect questions. Try to analyse where you are failing. In which portion you score most negative marks. If a bit concept update is required go for it. Mark it.

After test session, relax for an hour or so. Watch TV. Visit your friends’ home. Discuss each other’s difficulties. Have a relaxed conversation. Else sleep.

At night, go for unsolved problems and concept updates that you marked.  Many of these problems could be faced by you first time. Try to solve them using all books and materials you have available. This is the last chance to increase your rank in IIT JEE. The more sincerely you do this step, the more your rank will improve. This single step could give you a gain in ranking of around 10 – 15 %. Believe me.

For 15-20 day, regularly take these tests till last 2 days of exam. For last two days, normally prefer to avoid reading anything. If you cannot, do not go for deep study and for new concept. Just revise 2-3 times daily every formula and tricks from a collection book, normally provided by institutes (like compendium of YG Files). This is a simple one year plan for repeaters. Review it again if you like to use it. And then That’s it!

On the final exam day, appear sincerely. Think of your two-year long struggled journey. Have confidence within yourself! Keep saying, I can do it!

SUMMARY

Let us just summarise the Phases mentioned above:

Phase I: December to January : Completion of the syllabus with initial revision.

Phase II:  Not more than a month : Marked Questions should be perfectly mastered. Another shot of Revision.

Phase III:  Simulator Tests to be taken till the date of IIT-JEE Exam. Inculcate the habit of exam time without any disturbance. Analyse mistakes. Don’t get messed up with a new topic/chapter.

Always remember-

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, learning from failure.”
